Toy Story 3 - the Video Game

I wish I'd had the Toy Story 3 game when I was a kid. Back then I hardly had any good cooperative games to play with my siblings, and playing games with my parents usually amounted to me taking it easy on them so they wouldn't quit.

But what makes Toy Story 3 even more special than its great cooperative play is that it actually makes good use of its license. Movie tie-ins have a reputation for being awful, but developer Avalanche Software has found a good way to use the Toy Story name without just creating another rehash of the movie's plot. Instead TS3 has both a decent, story-driven game that touches upon some highlights from the film, as well as an inventive open world game called Toy Box mode.

The story mode is still fun and worthwhile, but Toy Box is really the selling point for the game. It's essentially an open world quest-driven game where you play as the Sheriff of a toy town, using Woody, Buzz, or Jessie. And since it doesn't follow the movie's plot, the entire world is based around the idea of how the toys perceive their environment when they're being played with. The result is a mode that still has all the familiar faces that you'd expect from the film franchise, but that introduces a host of gameplay elements that fall well outside what a simple follow-the-film game would allow.

The quests in Toy Box are a little simple for most adults (though still fun), but what they're really good at is introducing the various ways you can interact with the world. Each new mechanic, instead of being told through a standard tutorial, is introduced in a quirky quest, making learning a whole lot more fun than usual. And even when the quests were far too easy I still found myself becoming addicted, as TS3's quest lines are structured in such a way that you'll finish one only to open up several more, making it easy to get into that "just one more" mentality.

But while Toy Box can be a really guided experience if that's how you want to play it, what I appreciate is how it really tries to put something in there for everyone. Kids, or people who just don't care about doing quests, can spend time decorating and customizing their town or citizens – right down to where they want buildings to be. Additionally, players also get the ability to do a host of other fun things like go on races, do trick courses with toy cars, or even just enlarge and shrink things in the world with piles of goo. The Toy Box always has something for players to do on a whim, encouraging kids and adults alike to just, well, play. After all, when we were kids our playtime wasn't always structured, right? Toy Box really gives you a chance to just let your imagination take you to silly places.

I don't even have kids, but if I did TS3 is a game I wouldn't mind playing with them. Toy Box's cooperative play is excellent, allowing two players to do totally different things at any given time. If you want to do the quests while your sibling, significant other or kid just dresses up characters and literally paints the town red, you can. Players don't have to be in the same area, and no player can do irreversible things to the game that will adversely affect the other – perfect for subversive family members who you have to spend time with.

Box Office Battle Continues to Rage in China

LEGO Brand RetailChina's film industry heavyweights were hoping to prove their mettle this summer and everything seems to be going according to that very plan.

For while Hollywood blockbusters dominated box office returns over June and July, it has been a local production that has ruled ever since, according to figures released this week.

But, mainland Chinese film critics say Hollywood - as always - might still have the last laugh.

China's State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) this week announced that Hollywood's Toy Story 3 had picked up 64 million yuan (7.3 million euros) over June and July but had been eclipsed by China's Aftershock ever since, as it became the country's highest ever grossing film by topping the 532 million yuan (61 million euros) mark.

Figures for the Mandarin-language version of Disney's High School Musical - released last week - were unavailable following the mainland government's decision to shut cinemas at the weekend, in a mark of respect to those who died in the recent mudslides in Zhouqu county.

But that film will now face a four-pronged attack from foreign films over the next month. This week's release of Shrek Forever After will be followed by The Expendables (August 20), The Last Airbender (August 23) and The Charlemagne Code (August 26).

The latest installment of the Shrek franchise is expected to top the 100 million yuan (11.5 million euros) mark, but Chinese media analyst Zhang Nuo still believes the playing field in China has been altered.

"Overall foreign films are not winning big as more and more Chinese films come out touting big budgets and A-list Chinese casts, like Aftershock,'' Zhang told the Global Times.

Local films also have a helping hand in the form of the Chinese government, as film critic Yu Fan explained.
"Theaters and distributors have their ways to make sure that no imported films threaten domestic ones,'' said Yu. "For instance, theaters pushed back hits like Shrek and Inception until later releases to give Aftershock an edge.''

Halloween Costume - Sheriff Woody Pride

Woody is an old-fashioned pull-string cowboy doll. The voice-box that is activated by the pull-string says many simple phrases such as "Reach for the sky!" , "You're my favorite deputy!" and "There's a snake in my boot!" As mentioned in Toy Story 2, his construction includes an "original hand-painted face, natural dyed-blanket stitched vest, and hand-stitched poly-vinyl hat." Woody wears an empty gun holster at his belt. He is Andy's favorite toy since kindergarten, with a special spot on the bed, and is the leader of the toys in Andy's room. In Toy Story 2 it is revealed that he is based on the main character from a popular 1950s TV Show, Woody's Roundup. When Al is bargaining with Andy's mom in an attempt to take Woody, Andy's mom declines Al's bargain, stating that Woody is "an old family toy." Stinky Pete also directly refers to him as a hand-me-down toy later in the movie, and when Woody finds a record player in Al's apartment room, he states "I haven't seen one of these in ages!", again supporting that he has been around longer than Andy. (In fact, when introducing the 2009 set of Toy Story collectibles, John Lasseter said "We always imagined he was a hand-me-down to Andy from his father.") He is voiced by Tom Hanks in the films and by his brother Jim Hanks on other occasions.

Although he has been deemed the boss in Andy's room, Woody is somewhat of a flawed character as seen in all three movies, as he has random bouts of jealousy, anger, frustration, and feelings of inadequacy regarding his role many times. He even is seen harming (almost destroying) Buzz in their first encounter to stay in Andy's good graces. These emotions often arise out of his frustration of being an immortal toy adjusting to his human owner aging.

Halloween Costume - Hamm

Hamm, often known as Hamm the Piggy Bank, or on occasion as Evil Doctor pork chop when used by Andy as a villain, is a wise-cracking realist piggy bank with a cork in his belly (to replace his original stopper which was lost prior to Toy Story). He and Mr. Potato Head appear to be best friends, as they are often seen playing games and clapping hands with each other whenever something spectacular happens. Also, Hamm takes a dislike to the chicken mascot of Al's Toy Barn, especially when he later realizes that Al McWhiggin, the mascot and owner of Al's Toy Barn, as well as the crooked yard sale customer who stole Woody, are the same man. Out of all the toys, he is shown to have the most knowledge of the outside, often being very familiar with different technologies or devices that are shown. I don't know if this will be a big seller or not for Halloween, but it is kind of cute and apart of the Toy Story Trilogy, appearing in all three movies.

Halloween Costume - Jessie

Continuing on this week, we have the Jesse costume from Toy Story, actually, she appears in the second and third movie in the Toy Story trilogy (and it currently is a trilogy, although, you want to assume that there will be more in the Toy Story saga). This comes in a variety of sizes from little little to adult. You can bring the fictional character of Jessie to life with this officially licensed Deluxe Jessie Costume.

Jessie the doll has a character very similar to the one portrayed on the television show. She is excitable, brave and very athletic. The doll, however, carries a great deal of sadness, as she was abandoned by her original owner. Years of being in storage have made her somewhat withdrawn, distrustful, and a little afraid of the dark, but she longs to again be a source of joy to a child, which came true at the end of the film when Andy accepted her (and Bullseye) into his toy collection. In Toy Story 3, she appears to be more loyal and helpful to others, and develops a mutual attraction with Buzz. If you go to a costume party as a couple, it would be better to go as Jessie and Buzz, not as Jessie and Woody.

Toy Story 3: The Highest Grossing Animated Film Ever

Twilight New Moon Wolf Girl Rubber Bracelet 2-Pack By Kate Youde

His catchphrase is to go "to infinity, and beyond" and, if his box office receipts are anything to go by, Buzz Lightyear is on course to set sky-high standards of success for any big-screen animated character to follow.

Toy Story 3, in which Lightyear stars, is set to become the first animation to take $1 Billion at box offices globally after becoming the highest grossing animation ever, this weekend.
Toy Story 3 Buzz and Woody Bearbrick 2-Pack
Its characters, including spaceranger Buzz, cowboy Woody and resourceful Barbie, helped Disney/Pixar gross $920m in global ticket sales since it opened in June. The previous record holder was DreamWorks Animation's Shrek 2, which raked in $919.8m.

Toy Story 3's success makes it the fourth highest grossing Disney movie ever, behind Johnny Depp blockbusters Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07bn), Alice in Wonderland ($1.02bn) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ($961m).

Shrek Bobble Head
Cinemagoers' love affair with animation shows no sign of waning. Shrek Forever After is currently pulling in viewers across the country, while Lionsgate's 3D wolf animation Alpha and Omega hits the big screen in October. Universal's Despicable Me, which knocked the latest Twilight installment off the top of the box office on its release in the United States last month, is also due out in the UK in October.

Charles Gant, film editor at Heat magazine and a box office analyst, said studios had invested in their own animation divisions over recent years after seeing the success of DreamWorks Animation in rivaling Disney. "3D has been fantastic for animation and also the family market just keeps getting bigger," he added. "It's very rare a big studio loses money on a family film."

Monsters Inc Sully and Mike Kubrick 2-Pack
Toy Story 3 is the latest in a line of hits for Pixar, which also created Up, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc. The film has been credited with reducing grown men to tears with its themes of growing up, separation and loss.

Helen Nabarro, head of animation direction at the National Film and Television School, said the success of the Toy Story franchise and feature-length animations such as Oscar winner Up was down to sophisticated scripts and strong stories. "It can be a recognizable human world but with this extra fantasy that you believe," she explained.

Ms Nabarro, who was an executive producer on the BBC's Robbie the Reindeer films, said animation was "very much mainstream" now. It may have been viewed as "kids' stuff" in the past but now targeted adults.
Disney-Pixar Up I Can Speak Paper Giclée Print
Aardman's Wallace & Gromit did animation a "massive service" in showing that the genre could work for both adults and children, she added.

Hollywood's top actors are increasingly keen to voice animated characters. Steve Carell features as Gru in Despicable Me, while Brad Pitt will voice hero Metro Man opposite Will Ferrell's villain in DreamWorks Animation's Megamind this December.

Toy Story 3 Alien costume

This costume should be very popular! Toy Story 3 was successful, following the other two movies. I can't say whether it was better received than Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, How to Train Your Dragon, or Despicable Me, which the three plus Toy Story have a great shot for best animated film come Oscar time. And even though I would say I am a very big fan of Pixar, I don't think they will walk away with it this year, but that is only my opinion. Still, their movies are very marketable, and the Alien costume should be a HUGE hit!

The Aliens from Toy Story are adorable three-eyed green monsters in blue suits. Your little guy will look so cute in this classic costume. The boy's classic Toy Story 3 Alien costume features a comfortable blue jumpsuit with an attached dark blue belt. On the left chest there is an alien logo. This Toy Story Alien costume can be easily worn right over his clothes. The highlight of the alien costume is the head piece which is plush and stuffed. It features three eyes, a purple collar, a stuffed green antenna on the top and an ample face opening for a full view. The headpiece secures with adjustable Velcro closures. The headpiece is easy to put on and take off so even the littlest tykes can manage it.

Blockbuster Hits Send Profits Soaring at Disney

A string of smash-hit movies, including Toy Story 3, helped to boost Disney's profits by 40 per cent to $1.3bn (£830m) in the three months to 3 July. The US entertainment giant said it increased its revenues by 16 per cent to $10bn in the second quarter.

Alongside the third installment of Toy Story, a strong box-office performance from Iron Man 2 and Alice In Wonderland lifted revenues at Disney's film studio arm by almost a third to $1.6bn.

Profits at its media networks business rose by half to $1.6bn, driven by a strong performance from its ESPN sports network. Bob Iger, president of the Walt Disney Company, said it was particularly pleased with America's performance at the World Cup, which generated returns that were "nothing short of spectacular". Broadcasting revenues rose by $5m to $209m driven by global sales of programs from ABC Studios including Lost, Ghost Whisperer and Castle. Its theme parks and resorts business saw revenues increase by 3 per cent to $2.8bn.

Buzz Lightyear to the rescue as 'Toy Story 3' sets box-office record

By Jonathan Brown

Eleven years since Toy Story 2 broke cinematic convention by proving to be a better film than its original, British audiences must endure the best part of another month before catching the third instalment in the adventures of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the toy cupboard.

But in the United States, where studios had a series of flops in May and the worst Memorial Day attendances in 15 years, Pixar's long-awaited new release hit the screens last weekend and has become the pioneering animator's fastest ever grossing film.

Summer movie preview: Over the top

Jason Anderson
Special to the Star

It may take more than a guy with a shiny suit and an AC/DC soundtrack to keep movie audiences pumped up all summer long. It may also take more than the prettiest star or most dazzling FX wizardry. It may even take more than 3-D, which so many in Hollywood believe will save their industry.

What it is exactly that will keep moviegoers attention throughout the long summer months is anyone’s guess. All we can say for certain is that the industry is pulling out the big guns, unofficially kicking off the summer movie season with the highly anticipated, action-packed Iron Man 2, which hits theatres next weekend.

It’s almost impossible for filmmakers and producers to guarantee their wares will find success. And audiences are just as difficult to entice as they are to predict.

That’s why every release will be out to prove it has something the others don’t, an increasing challenge now that Avatar has redefined the wow factor. In other words, it’s up to you to decide whether a 3-D retrofit or a funny trailer is enough to get you into the multiplex. Here are this summer’s contenders. (Dates may change so keep checking the Star’s movie listings.)

May 7

Iron Man 2

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow

Story: After outing himself as the invincible Iron Man, Tony Stark takes heat from all sides, including Mickey Rourke as a Russian foe with a similar talent for gadgetry and a score to settle.

Competitive edge: Few summer movies can compete with the arsenal of weaponry for this sequel to the 2008 Marvel hit, which includes everything from new AC/DC songs to Scarlett Johansson as flame-haired superspy Black Widow.
